Scooter rental in Uluwatu: what to know before you ride
Renting a scooter in Uluwatu follows the same rules as the rest of Bali: a motorcycle licence from your own country plus an International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles, a helmet for rider and passenger, and a deposit in cash or as a card hold. The Bukit is hillier than the beach towns, and that is what to plan around.

Can a shop deliver a scooter to my villa in Uluwatu?
Ask the shop whether it delivers to your villa, and send it your exact address or a map pin. From the airport Uluwatu is about 20 km, roughly 45 to 60 minutes by car, and a scooter in traffic is harder to predict. Film the bike before you leave and check the tyres, brakes, lights and fuel.
What are the roads like in Uluwatu?
The roads have hills, bends and steep descents, and the access roads to some beaches are sandy. Beginners can find it harder than the beach towns, so keep your first rides short and in daylight, and avoid poorly lit roads after dark.
What does the rainy season do to the roads in Uluwatu?
From roughly November to March wet roads and standing water make the Bukit harder still.
Do police check scooters in Uluwatu?
Police checks happen here, as in the other tourist areas. Officers can ask to see your licence, your IDP and the bike's registration papers (STNK), and they check your helmet. Fines are set by law as maximums, up to Rp 1.000.000 for riding without a licence, so the amount on the day can differ. Travel insurance often excludes scooters, and riding without the right licence class may void a claim.
How do I avoid an argument over the deposit?
Photograph and film the bike at pickup and again at return, and keep the clips until your deposit is back. A scratch that was already there is a common argument over a deposit.
Did the 2023 plan to stop tourists renting motorbikes take effect?
In March 2023 Bali's governor announced a plan to stop foreign tourists renting motorbikes. We have not found confirmation that it took effect, and we last looked in October 2026. Rules for visitors change, so ask your shop or your accommodation before you book.
