Scooter rental in Seminyak: what to know before you ride

Renting a scooter in Seminyak follows the same rules as the rest of Bali: a motorcycle licence from your own country plus an International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles, a helmet for rider and passenger, and a deposit in cash or as a card hold. In Seminyak the lanes and the traffic are what to plan around.

Is a scooter a good way to get around Seminyak?

For a confident rider a scooter can be the quickest way around, because it fits through the narrow lanes (gang). It is generally not recommended for first-time riders. Ask whether the shop delivers to your villa or hotel, and film the bike before you leave and check the tyres, brakes, lights and fuel.

When is the traffic worst in Seminyak?

Traffic builds from roughly 4 pm and stays heavy until about 8. Congestion tends to peak on Sunset Road, around Petitenget and at the Kerobokan junction, so plan to be back before the rush or wait until it clears.

How far is Seminyak from the airport and the other areas?

From Seminyak the airport is roughly 10 to 13 km, and in traffic the ride can take about 45 to 90 minutes. Canggu is about 30 to 45 minutes, Sanur about 45 minutes, Uluwatu about an hour and a half, and Ubud one and a half to two hours.

What does the rainy season do in Seminyak?

From roughly November to March wet roads and standing water make riding harder, and low-lying parts of Seminyak can flood briefly in heavy rain.

Do police check scooters in Seminyak?

Police checks are common in Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta and Ubud. Officers can ask to see your licence, your IDP and the bike's registration papers (STNK), and they check your helmet. Fines are set by law as maximums, up to Rp 1.000.000 for riding without a licence, so the amount on the day can differ. Travel insurance often excludes scooters, and riding without the right licence class may void a claim. Read the rental contract to see what the shop's own cover includes.

Did the 2023 plan to stop tourists renting motorbikes take effect?

In March 2023 Bali's governor announced a plan to stop foreign tourists renting motorbikes. We have not found confirmation that it took effect, and we last looked in October 2026. Rules for visitors change, so ask your shop or your accommodation before you book.
