Is renting a scooter in Bali safe?
Bali traffic is dense and fast, and the crash statistics are not gentle, so the honest answer is that it depends on you and on the bike you are given. Both can be checked before you set off.

Start with the bike. Squeeze both brake levers: they should bite well before the lever reaches the grip. Look for visible tread on the tyres, no cracks in the sidewall and no bald patch on one shoulder. Test the lights, both indicators and the horn, which in Bali traffic is how you announce yourself. Check that the helmet strap clicks and holds and that the shell has no cracks.
Then the rider. Wear a helmet that fastens, and make sure anyone behind you wears one too. Stay off the bike after a drink. And carry the right licence, a motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit for motorcycles, so your travel insurance still applies if something goes wrong.
Six minutes that save you an argument
Do this every time, including with a shop you have used before. It is the cheapest insurance available in Bali.
- Film the bike before you ride away. One slow lap with your phone, close on the plate and on every scratch. Thirty seconds now settles any dispute about damage later.

- Ask where the STNK is — the bike's registration document. You want to know the bike is legally registered, and police at a checkpoint will ask for it.
