Scooter rental in Denpasar: what to know before you ride

Renting a scooter in Denpasar follows the same rules as the rest of Bali: a motorcycle licence from your own country plus an International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles, a helmet for rider and passenger, and a deposit in cash or as a card hold. In Denpasar the paperwork is the part to get right.

By Rodaku Rules and facts on this page last checked October 2026.

What should I ask a shop in Denpasar before I rent?

Ask where the shop is based, where you collect and return the bike, and whether delivery to your address is free or costs extra.

Which licence do I need on a KITAS?

If you live in Bali on a KITAS, we could not find a clear rule on which licence you need, so ask the traffic police rather than assuming.

How do police enforce the scooter rules in Denpasar?

Bali police have described electronic ticketing (ETLE) cameras as their main enforcement focus in 2026. Fines are set by law as maximums: up to Rp 1.000.000 for riding without a licence, up to Rp 250.000 without a helmet, and up to Rp 500.000 without the registration papers (STNK).

What does insurance cover on a rental scooter?

What rental insurance covers varies, so ask exactly what is included and read the contract. Travel insurance often excludes scooters, and riding without the right licence class may void a claim.

What should I photograph at pickup and return?

Photograph and film the bike at pickup and again at return, and keep the clips until your deposit is back.

Did the 2023 plan to stop tourists renting motorbikes take effect?

In March 2023 Bali's governor announced a plan to stop foreign tourists renting motorbikes. We have not found confirmation that it took effect, and we last looked in October 2026. Rules for visitors change, so ask your shop or your accommodation before you book.
